The Raag Hindustani Blog

Indian classical music is a very rich and beautiful tradition of music that goes back over 3,500 years. Over the millennia, it has evolved into two distinct schools – the Hindustani school, which is prevalent in North India, and the Carnatic school, which is prevalent in South India. The two are quite similar on a fundamental level but have evolved to develop distinct styles over the centuries.

The Raag Hindustani website functions as a textbook explaining all the basic concepts of Hindustani (North Indian) classical music from scratch, demonstrating through examples with notations (both Indian and Western) at each step.

The Raag Hindustani blog, however, is for writing more freely about a wider variety of topics related to classical music in India, not limited to North Indian classical music. I hope to take up historical, cultural, regional, and technical aspects of Indian classical music for discussion.

If you would like to read my writings on a wider range of subjects related to India (culture, history, religions, society, etc.) please check out my India Insights blog.
